WORKSHOPS
DAY THREE
New Mexico Tribal Forest and Fire Summit
Field Trips
Option 1: Walatowa Timber Industries - Jemez Pueblo, NM
This field visit will focus on learning about the operational management of running a Tribal timber mill enterprise. We will be walking through the mill’s operation to learn about their production system, products they make and their marketing sales. This will be a great opportunity to also learn about the business side of the enterprise - how and why they got started - but also learn how the Tribe is supportive of this enterprise.
This visit requires participants to wear full-body clothing and closed-toed shoes.
Option 2: Rx Pile burn & Biochar demo - Sandia Pueblo, NM
We will be visiting a Rx pile burn project site that the Tribe has been working on. Tribal land managers will discuss their process to prepare for the Rx and how they assess Rx effectiveness post burn. Additionally, this visit will have a BioChar demonstration activity where a presenter will discuss the benefits of utilizing biochar for mitigation and restoration efforts.

This visit requires participants to wear full-body clothing and closed-toed shoes.
Option 3: Santa Ana Pueblo Prescribed Fire Field Trip
Join us to learn about Santa Ana Pueblo’s efforts to maintain their lands with broadcast fire, by visiting past and upcoming prescribed burn areas. This field trip will expand on the workshop on prescribed fire planning to see a real example of the prescribed fire planning and implementation process in action.
This visit requires participants to wear full-body clothing and closed-toed shoes.
