In solidarity with la Nueva Trinidad

Nueva Trinidad community relocated to a shelter.

On Wednesday June 4th, following the eruption of Volcán de Fuego in Guatemala, 163 families from the community of Nueva Trinidad were once again forced to flee their homes to seek shelter.  The Indigenous community, originally displaced during the Guatemalan Civil War (1960-1996), continues the fight to be relocated to a safe location, without the looming threat of the volcano.

Through our partners at Utz Che’, TWP has been supporting this community since the catastrophic 2018 eruption of Volcán de Fuego, which claimed hundreds of lives and displaced thousands, including the people of  Nueva Trinidad.

Although they have now been able to return to their homes, the fear remains. They live under constant threat of losing their homes, their crops and, most importantly, their lives. The intensifying rainy season only worsens their vulnerability.

We stand with the community as they call on their government for swift and decisive action. Relocation is not just necessary—it is URGENT.

Every human being deserves a dignified life, one that provides a healthy and safe place to live. Help us amplify the voices of a community that has long been ignored, as they continue to fight for their survival.  You can listen to their testimonials (in Spanish) here.

Today we stand in solidarity with you. Soon, our home will be a place where life is safe, where our children can grow up, and where the volcano will no longer force us to flee
