PEOPLE OVER PROJECTS: Hellen Castro
Behind every reference to “community partner,” “donor,” and “staff,” there is a name, a face, and a story. Our work is about people, by people. As part of our continued focus on People over Projects – an investment in long-term relationships over short-term targets – we’re sharing stories of the people that make our work possible.
Fondly referred to as “Hellen with two Ls,” or simply “Castro,” in the office, Hellen Castro has been with TWP since 2020 as our Development and Outreach Manager. Hellen’s work spans departments, focused on the marketing communications, donor relationships, and fundraising efforts that support our programs.
Born and raised in Costa Rica, Hellen’s initial draw to TWP came from a deep personal connection to the region and priorities central to us.
Hellen: “I came to the US and to Fort Collins specifically to do an MBA that focused on sustainability and entrepreneurship. I was hoping to shift my career into something more meaningful ....The first thing that sparked my interest was knowing that TWP worked with the region, especially since I know a lot about the history, struggles, and realities of those countries.”
In order to continue her work with TWP, Hellen had to go through a long and grueling immigration process, further cementing her commitment to the migration, environmental, and other challenges that shape TWP’s work.
Hellen: “It’s hard for someone like me, who is here by choice and has a support system, so I can’t even imagine what it’s like for people who are forced to leave their homes with no choice. Going through this experience has made me even more connected to our mission. A lot of the work we do impacts people in these situations. I think it ties into many of our priorities, especially environmental stewardship, because climate change and natural resource availability are some of the main reasons people are forced to leave their homes and seek new places to settle.”
Alongside her own experience, working with people from a wide range of backgrounds has continued to shape how Hellen views the why of TWP’s efforts. The interconnection between the land and the people is foundational to our community partners’ understanding of stewardship and has become a central guide in Hellen’s work.
Hellen: “Growing up in Costa Rica, I’ve always loved the forest and the ocean—they’re my favorite places. I’ve always had this sense that we need to take care of them. But being at TWP over the past couple of years has really shifted my thinking. It's not just about preserving the environment for its own sake. It’s also about protecting the environment for the people who depend on it.”
Hellen’s commitment to our work comes from knowing the places, knowing the people, and knowing personally the challenges they face. We’re grateful to be part of her story.
Hellen: “This is emotionally charged work. We have to face a lot of hard realities, and it can be difficult from many angles. But knowing that, even in a small way, we're making an impact is really fulfilling. It feels good to wake up and know that my work is worthwhile.”
